The Calvin University Knights ACHA D3 Hockey Team fell to the Grand Valley State Lakers 5-3 on Thursday night.
After coming off two losses last weekend to Trine the Knights looked to bounce back and get a win back on the board. Unfortunately, the Lakers had other plans in mind.
In the first period the Knights came out strong and fast and looked to set a good tempo for the game early on. The Knights got some good scoring chances early, but it was the Lakers who got the chance that mattered. With about six minutes to go in the frame the Lakers found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
At the end of the first period the Knights found themselves trailing 1-0.
In the second period the Lakers began where they left off in the first and within two minutes extended their lead to 2-0. About six minutes later the Knights got their first goal of the game which came from Will Weiss with the assists from Jacob Waligora and Tanner Dey. Within the next twenty seconds the Knights tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from Waligora with the assist from Weiss. About three minutes later the Lakers retook the lead and put the pressure back on the Knights. The Lakers made matters worse for the Knights when they added their fourth goal with only forty seconds left to go in the frame.
At the end of the second period the Knights were down 4-2.
In the third period the Knights began to storm back and around the half way point they brought the game within one goal. The Knights third goal came from Keegan Oberski. Sadly, the Lakers sealed the game with a late goal in the third to put the Knights away.
At the end of regulation the Lakers came out victorious over the Knights 5-3.
COACH HARTLEIN: "We were down 1-0 after one, then 4-2 after two, fought back to 4-3 and gave up a goal with two minutes left, the boys battled hard."
The Knights are back in action Saturday, Nov. 6th as they take on the Lakers again at 7:30PM at Eagles Ice Center.
