The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team was defeated by the Toledo University Rockets 4-3 on Friday night.
In the first period both teams came out strong but it was the Rockets who found the first goal of the game to take the 1-0 lead over the Knights. The Knights tied the game at 1-1 later in the period with a goal from Maverick Baxtrom with the assists from Zach Malkowski and Ryan Jagielski. Then with about 40 seconds left to go in the frame the Rockets found the back of the net again to take a 2-1 lead.
At the end of the first period the Knights found themselves trailing 2-1. The Knights outshot the Rockets 16-12.
In the second period the Rockets found the back of the net first with a goal in the last four minutes of the frame. Just two minutes later the Knights got the goal back with a goal from Chris Bebelos with the helper from Michael Fatta. Then once again with under a minute to go in the frame the Knights gave up another goal to the Rockets.
At the end of the second period the Knights were trailing 4-2. The Knights outshot the Rockets 21-7.
In the third period the Knights got the only goal of the frame. The goal came from Jacob Siebenga with the assists from Harmen Vining and Kyle VanDusen. Unfortunately, the Knights could not tie the game up and fell short.
At the end of regulation the Knights were defeated by the Rockets 4-3. The Knights outshot the Rockets 15-7 in the third.
Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene finished the game with 22 saves.
COACH PETRUSMA: "We definitely created enough chances to win unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of puck luck tonight. We will see if we can't tighten things up defensively for Saturday night's game."
