The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team fell to the Grand Valley State University Lakers 3-2 in a shootout loss on Saturday night.
After coming off of a shootout win over GVSU on Friday night the Knights looked to finish the sweep this weekend over the Lakers. Unfortunately, the Lakers came to spoil the party.
In the first period both teams came out strong looking to find an early go ahead goal. But it was the defensive side of things that held firm on both sides and neither team could find the back of the net.
The first period concluded with the game still tied at 0-0.
In the second period the Lakers came out very strong and quickly put heavy pressure on the Knights back line. Just three minutes in the Lakers found the breakthrough and took the 1-0 lead. It wasn't until the last five minutes of the frame in which the Knights got the goal back. The goal came from Jacob Siebenga with the assists from Kyle VanDusen and Josh Ernst. Just two minutes later the Knights took the lead with another goal from Siebenga with the assist once again from VanDusen.
The second period ended with the Knights on top of the Lakers 2-1.
In the third period both teams went back and forth and end to end with solid scoring chances on both sides. It took till about the seven minute mark left in the frame till we got the first goal in the third and unfortunately for the Knights it went to the Lakers. With the game now tied at 2-2 the Knights looked to find the last minute breakthrough. Sadly, the breakthrough did not come for the Knights and the game headed to overtime.
In overtime the both teams got good scoring opportunites but neither team could find the back of the net.
In the shootout the Knights fell 2-1.
The game concluded with the Knights falling to the Lakers 3-2.
Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene had a strong game with 37 saves.
