The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated Cleary University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in their second game of the season.
After a tough loss Friday night for the Knights' home opener the team looked to bounce back with a win on Saturday and they did just that.
In the first period the Knights came out looking flat and quickly fell deep into their own zone. Within the first minute of the game Cleary had taken the early 1-0 lead and put the Kngihts in a tough position. Within the next 8 minutes the Knights found the back of the net with a goal from Kyle VanDusen with the assist from Michael Fatta. Just 3 minutes later the Knights tallied another one on the board with a goal from Charles Riordan with the assist from Ryan Jagielski. Finally, the Knights capped off a three goal first period just a minute later with a goal from Michael Fatta with the assists from Maverick Baxtrom and Ian Elkins.
The first period concluded with the Knights leading Cleary 3-1.
In the second period the Knights kept up the pressure on the Cleary defense and had them pinned back in their own defensive zone. Within 3 minutes into the frame the Knights found the back of the net once again this time the goal came from Josh Ernst with the assist from Michael Iatridis. About five minutes later Cleary broke through the Knights defense and got a goal back bringing the score to 4-2. Just two minutes after the Cleary goal the Knights responded with another goal from Ernst with the assist from Chris Bebelos.
The second period concluded with the Knights leading 5-2.
In the third period the action went back and forth from end to end with good scoring chances on both sides but neither team could find another goal to add onto the board.
The game concluded with the Knights coming out victorious over Cleary 5-2.
Knights Goaltender Liam Austin had a strong game with 26 saves on the night.
The Knights are back in action Friday, October 8th as they take on Oakland Unviersity.
