Calvin Knights Fall to Cleary University 2-0

The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team fell to Cleary University 2-0 to open their season on Friday night.

The Knights went into their opening game of the season hoping to start out on the right track with a win over Cleary, sadly the Knights' party plans were spoiled.

In the first period the Knights came out with strong energy and speed and looked to put the pressure on the Cleary defense early in the game. The Knights recieved some good scoring chances early but could not find the back of the net. About halfway through the frame the Knights were caught out in the offensive zone on the powerplay and Cleary quickly jumped on the opportunity took it down the ice and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead over the Knights. The Knights battled back for the rest of the period but could not find a way to get on the board.

The first period concluded with the Knights trailing 1-0.

In the second period the Knights controlled most of the action and had double the shots then Cleary in the frame but once again they were denied that mark on the scoreboard. Although, the Knights created many chances the Cleary defense held strong and the Knights went into the lockeroom frustrated but yet determined they would find a way through.

The second period concluded with the Knights still trailing 1-0.

In the third period the Knights once again controlled most of the action and the pace of play. But for Cleary all it took was once lapse in defense and they were in on goal. Around the 8 minute mark of the frame Cleary found the back of the net once again to take a 2-0 lead over the Knights. The Knights once again fought back hard but were denied again their first goal of the season.

The game concluded as Cleary defeated the Knights 2-0.

Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene had a strong game with 24 saves on the night. The Knights also outshot Cleary 43-26 for the game.

The Knights looked to bounce back Saturday as they take on Cleary once again.
