The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Oakland University Grizzlies 4-2 on Saturday night to complete the sweep for the weekend.
In the first period both teams came out strong recieving some good chances in front of goal, but neither team could find the back of the net. About halfway throught he period the Grizzlies opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights fought back strong for the rest of the period but could not find a way through the Grizzlies defense.
The first period concluded with the Grizzlies leading the Knights 1-0.
In the second period the Knights took control of the game, possesing the puck for most of the period but once again were completely shut down by the Grizzlies defense. Late in the period the Grizzlies found the back of the net again to take a two goal lead heading into the third.
The second period concluded with the Grizzlies leading the Knights 2-0.
In the third period the Knights took full control of the game. The Knights got on the board just twenty-five seconds into the period with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assists from Jacob Siebenga and Josh Hartlein. Around the ten minute mark of the period the Knights tied the game at two with a goal from Christian Gums with the assist from Ian Elkins. Four minutes later the Knights took the lead with a goal from Siebenga with the helper from Virtanen. The Knights went on to seal the game with an empty net goal with about a minute to go from Cal Erdmann.
The game concluded with the Knights coming out victorious over the Grizzlies 4-2.
Knights Goaltender Josh Greune had another strong game with 34 saves.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, February 20th as they face off against the Grand Valley State Lakers at 8:30PM.
