The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Oakland University Grizzlies 4-1 on Friday night.
In the first period the Knights came out strong controlling the game early and recieved some great chances in front of the Grizzlies goal, but could not find the back of the net. The Grizzlies then began to settle into the game but were shut down by the Knights defense.
The first period concluded with the game tied 0-0.
In the second period the Knights opened the scoring about four minutes in with a goal from Declan Curtis for his first goal of the season. Three minutes later the Knights found the back of the net again. The goal came from Riley Robertson with the assists from Joe Wilkinson and Graham Kormash. Then with four and a half minutes to go in the second frame the Grizzlies got on the board to cut the Knights lead down to one.
The second period concluded with the Knights leading the Grizzlies 2-1.
In the third period the game went end to end for the bulk of the period. The Knights were shut down for most of the period until the last minute. With fifty-two seconds left to go in the game the Knights scored an empty net goal. The goal came from Jared Virtanen with the assists from Austin Huizenga and Christian Gums. Then with sixteen seconds left to go the Knights tallied another, this time from Jacob Siebenga with the helper from Gums.
The game concluded with the Knights coming out on top over the Grizzlies 4-1.
Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene had a strong game with 27 saves.
