The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team fell to the Grand Valley State University Lakers 5-3 on Thursday night.
In the first period the Knights were put on the back foot early and the Lakers recieved some good chances in front of goal. About eight minutes into the period the Lakers found the breakthrough to take a 1-0 lead. With about a minute and half to go in the period the Knights got on the board with a goal from Riley Robertson with the assist from Cal Erdmann.
The first period concluded with the game tied 1-1.
In the second period the Lakers took control of the game scoring four unanswered goals. The Knights fought back hard but could not find a way to the back of the net.
The second period concluded with the Lakers leading the Knights 5-1.
In the third period the Knights pushed for a comeback. With about eight minutes to go in the period the Knights got on the board again with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assist from Erdmann and Josh Hartlein. With about a minute to go the Knights got another goal, this time from Brandon VanOphem with the assist from Virtanen.
The game concluded with the Lakers coming out victorious over the Knights 5-3.
Knights Goaltender Josh Gruene finished the game with 20 saves on the night.
The Knights return to action on December 6th as they take on Cleary University.
