No. 23 Hockey Freezes Aquinas, 3-2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23 ranked Calvin hockey team defeated crosstown rival Aquinas 3-2 on Saturday night. The win propels the Knights to 11-8-1 on the season.

With the victory, the Knights and Saint split the season series at 2-2.

The Knights took an early lead with two first-period goals. Senior Ryan Bradley (Clarkston, Mich. / Royal Oak Shrine Catholic) started the scoring on Saturday. Freshman Jared Virtanen (Abbotsford, British Columbia / Fort Frances Lakers) put the Knights up 2-0.

The Calvin defense held tough in the first period, killing off a five-on-three power play and not allowing a goal.

The Saints did not fold and scored two goals to even out the scoreboard.

Freshman Garrett Medina (Freeland, Mich. / Forest Lake Lakers) broke the tie late in the second when he wrapped the puck around the net and snuck the puck in past the Aquinas keeper's right side.

The Calvin defense anchored by junior Alex Gross (Fort Worth, Texas / Northern Cyclones) stood tall in the third period and some big saves kept the Saints off the scoreboard.

Calvin returns to action on Friday at Oakland.
