The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team recently captured the championship of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference and several players are receiving post-season awards for their season accomplishments.
Named to the MCHC West Division 1
st Team from Calvin are seniors
Ryan Worosz and
Myles Radersma and junior
Josiah Lambers. Named to the MCHC West Division 2
nd Team from Calvin are sophomores
Zach Westrick and
Nathan Sova.
In addition, the MCHC selects a Dream Team from the East and West Divisions and Radersma, Lambers and Worosz were all selected to the six player MCHC Dream Team.
1st TEAM
MYLES RADERSMA (Kitchener, ONÂ Kitchener Jr Rangers (Ontario AAA))
A forward, Radersma has been a mainstay on the Calvin attack throughout his four years with the Knights. The same has been true this year as he has netted 13 goals along with 17 assists for 30 points. He has two power play goals and two game-winning goals this season.
RYAN WOROSZ (Garden City, MIÂ Honeybaked HC (HPHL)
A goalie, Worosz has been the primary backstop for the Knights this year, sporting at 13-0-0 record with seven shutouts and a goals-against-average of 1.32 along with 442 saves.
JOSIAH LAMBERS (Grandville, Mich. Grandville HS)
Lambers has been a lockdown defenseman this season, helping the Knights give up just 1.65 goals per game with nine shutout victories. He has six goals on the year, three of them coming on the power play. He also has eight assists for a total of 14 points.
2nd TEAM
ZACH WESTRICK (Grand Rapids, MIÂ GR Catholic Central Cougars (MHSAA)
Westrick is a forward. He has 13 goals, 12 assists and 25 points on the season. Three of his goals this year have been game-winning goals.
NATE SOVA (Grand Rapids, MIÂ GR Catholic Central Cougars (MHSAA)
A forward, Sova has been a key part of Calvin's attack this year, scoring 12 goals with a team-leading 21 assists and 33 points. He has two game-winning goals and two power play goals.
The Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team captured the MCHC West Division title with a 9-0-1 conference record. Led by head coach Austin Huizenga, the Knights then captured the MCHC Tournament title, defeating Aquinas, the University of Michigan and East Division champion Oakland University. The win over Oakland University came in the MCHC Tournament Championship game and allowed the Knights to win their first Vezina Cup Trophy since 2006.
Calvin is 19-3-1 overall and currently ranked No. 1 in the ACHA D3 Top 25 poll. The Knights are the top seed for next week's ACHA D3 National Tournament and will open tournament play next Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. (CT) when they face Purdue University in a pool play game in St. Louis, Missouri.
