GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The No. 5 ranked Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team defeated No. 14 Michigan State University 4-1 at home on Saturday to complete the sweep. Calvin is now 7-0-1 on the season.
Calvin's
Joel Dieleman scored in the 5th minute of the game for the only goal of the 1st period.
Harry Ottsen and
Josiah Lambers assisted. Calvin had 10 shots on goal in the period while MSU
had 8.
Calvin extended its lead in the 2nd period with a goal from
Oleg Grishatov in the 16th minute of the period.
Zach Westrick and
Myles Radersma assisted. Calvin's 2 goal lead was short lived as
the Spartans Jake Gangola scored a minute later to make the game 2-1. Calvin had 16 shots on goal in the period while MSU had 8.
Calvin continued to pound the net in the 3rd period and scored 2 additional goals with 16 shots on goal.
Myles Radersma scored in the 7th minute of the final period from
Brock Hearth, and
Josiah Lambers, while
Zach Westrick scored in the 12th minute of the period with an assist from
Nathan Sova. MSU put up 13 shots on goal in the period.
In goal for the Knights was
Trent Goheen, saving 28 of 29 shots on goal, and for the Spartans was Joaquin Robinson who saved 38 of 42 shots on goal.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "That was a very successful weekend against a good MSU team. Our offensive zone pressure and defensive coverage were really good,
which is something we have been focusing on. Really happy for our guys. Now we move onto to prepare for Aquinas weekend."
