GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin ACHA Division 3 hockey team won its opening game of the season 4-2 at home against Northwood University.
The Knights gave up the first goal of the game just under five minutes into the 1st period with a solo goal from Northwood's  Noah Pearen. Calvin was able to draw even with Northwood with just over six minutes to play in the period.
Cam Svboda scored with an assist from
Myles Radersma.
Only a single goal was scored in the 2nd period despite both teams battering the net with a combined 29 shots on goal in the period.
Cam Svboda scored his 2nd of the game and the Knights' 2nd of the season with 16:47 to play in the period from
Gabriel Sova. The period ended with Calvin ahead 2-1 on Northwood.
Nathan Sova scored early in the 3rd to put Calvin ahead by two,
Zach Westrick, and
Owen Hodel had the assists. Calvin Increased it's lead to 4-1 with a goal from
Tomas Postal with 16:45 to play.
Gabriel Sova, and
Cam Svboda assisted. Northwood scored the final goal of the game with 7:20 left to play. Connor Stempky scored with help from Evan Kennedy, and Boston Bennett.
In goal for the Knights was
Ryan Worosz, saving 32 of 34 shots on goal. In goal for Northwood was Aiden Schultz, who saved 35 of 39 shots on goal.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "I'm very happy with how our team played tonight. Being our first game, we had a slower start, but we found our legs and ultimately played well. We played very good team hockey. We're looking forward to our first road test tomorrow night. Northwood is a very good team and play very well at home."
