GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.- The Calvin ACHA division 3 hockey team defeated Olivet Nazarene University 3-0, at home on Friday night January 17th. Calvin then completed the weekend sweep with a 9-0 win Saturday night over the visiting Tigers. The Knights improved to 11-4-3 on the year with the pair of victories and are ranked 6th in the country.
In Friday's game, both teams were held scoreless in the 1st period with Calvin goalie Garrett Walker stopping all five of the Tigers shots on goal. Olivet Nazarene goalie Connor Nuget stopped Calvin's 13 shots on goal to keep a clean sheet for both teams in the 1st period.
Calvin was able to break the seal on net in the 2nd period and scored all three of its goals in the 2nd period. Drew Klomparens scored the 1st goal of the game for the Knights 5:36 into the period from Hayden Fernhout and Henry Holleman. Chris Bebelos scored a pair to follow and put Calvin up 3. His 1st was assisted by Drew Klomparens and Brock Hearth.
The 3rd period was another slow period for both teams on the scoring front. Calvin put up an impressive 18 shots on goal, but no-one could find the back of the net. Olivet Nazarene had just 2 shots on goal in the 3rd period. Calvin's Garrett Walker saved 12 of 12 shots on goal in the game while the Tigers' Connor Nuget saved 51 of Calvin's 54 shots on goal.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "Really happy with our 2nd period. I thought the guys were good, but we still have room for improvement."
On Saturday, Calvin rolled to a 9-0 win over the Tigers. Calvin led 3-0 after one period and 4-0 after two periods before striking for five goals in the final frame. Zach Westrick and Drew Klomparens had two goals apiece. Scoring single goals for the Knights were Myles Radersma, Josh Philo, Chris Bebelos, Josh VanSchepen and Gabe Sova. Nathan Rublein notched three assists. Brock Hearth, VanSchepen, Hayden Fernhout and Harry Ottesen all had two assists apiece. Trent Goheen picked up the shutout in goal for the Knights.
