GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin dropped a 5-2 decision to top-ranked Lawrence Tech Friday night in the semifinals of the MCHC Vezina Cup Trophy semifinals.
Calvin (19-8-1) fell behind 1-0 after the first period and then 4-0 midway through the second period. Calvin added a second period goal by
Keigan Oberski assisted by
Joe Lugge to make it 4-1. Lawrence Tech countered with a goal four minutes later to lead 5-1 heading into the final period of play.
Calvin grabbed a lifeline with an early third period goal by
Tomas Postal assisted by
Brock Hearth and
Drew Klomparens to make it 5-2.
Calvin had a series of power play opportunities but when 0-9 with the extra-man opportunity as Lawrence Tech skated away with the win.
Lawrence Tech finished with a 23-19 shots on goal advantage. Sophomore
Ryan Worosz picked up 14 saves for Calvin in goal.
COACHES COMMENT: "We didn't come out ready to play," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "Credit to LTU. They're the #1 team in the country for a reason. I was happy with how we competed in the third period. Some positives to build off of, and some things to work on. Now we shift our focus to nationals and start prepping for that competition."
NEXT UP: Calvin will open pool play at the ACHA D3 Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 7 when it competes against Dartmouth College at 11:45 a.m. (CST).
