Calvin ACHA D3 Hockey Stuns #1 GVSU in MCHC Tourney Semis 6-0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a pair of tightly-fought regular season contests, the Calvin ACHA D3 hockey team used its third meeting of the year against top-ranked Grand Valley State to claim victory.

The 12th-ranked Knights stunned the top-ranked Lakers 6-0 in the second round of the MCHC Tournament Saturday night at Patterson Ice Center.

With the win, Calvin (19-7-1) advances to the Vezina Cup semifinals next Friday.

Calvin's win over GVSU was its third win of the year against a top-10 ranked team this season. Earlier this year, Calvin fought GVSU to a 2-2 overtime tie before falling 2-1 to the Lakers the following night.

In its win over GVSU Saturday night, Calvin took a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by freshman Sergey Yakunin who was fed by seniors Keigan Oberski and Joe Lugge.

With just 1:14 left in the first, sophomore Owen Duiker scored off an assist from sophomore Myles Radersma.

Early in the second period, sophomore Harry Ottsen scored off a feed from Lugge to put the Knights up 3-0.

Calvin added three goals in the third to seal the win. Lugge scored on an assist from junior Christopher Bebelos. Sophomore Gabriel Sova scored unassisted seconds later and Bebelos scored with seven minutes remaining with freshman Josiah Lambers drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin finished with a 40-26 shots on goal advantage. The Knights converted 3 of 4 power play opportunities while killing off all five of GVSU's power play chances. Junior Garrett Walker had 24 saves in goal for the Knights in the win.

COACHES COMMENT: "Couldn't be more happy for the guys in our locker room," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "They played outstanding tonight. Our penalty kill was great and our power play was really good. Couldn't be happier for our group."
