GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Two nationally-ranked rivals met last Saturday night in a rivalry matchup that neither side will soon forget. The second-ranked Flying Dutchmen of Hope and third-ranked Knights of Calvin skated to a 5-5 tie at Eagles Ice Center.
With the news that Calvin Director of Hockey and former D3 coach Mike Petrusma had passed away the night before, emotions were high inside the facility.
Fresh off a 5-2 win over Calvin the night before in Holland, Hope appeared poised to do the same on Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen built a 5-2 lead through two periods of play.
Calvin got on the board with a short-handed goal by senior
Christopher Bebelos. Jake Onstott of Hope scored back-to-back goals to give the Flying Dutchmen a 2-1 lead. Sophomore
Oleg Grishatov knotted the score at 2-2 off feeds from junior
Harry Ottsen and Bebelos but Hope countered with a power-play goal from Nolan Holtrop with just 30 seconds left in the period.
Onstott rang up a hat trick with a goal for Hope in the first minute of the second period and Brendan Tarpening scored another for Hope, this time with 6:36 left in the period for a 5-2 Hope advantage.
Calvin then mounted an epic comeback.
Junior
Myles Radersma scored off assists from freshman
Joshua VanSchepen and junior
Owen Duiker 7:14 into the third to make a 5-3 game. Duiker then belted home a shot off assists from Grishatov and junior
Ryan Worosz to make it 5-4 with 11:35 left in regulation.
The Knights then pressed for the equalizer and finally found gold in the final seconds of regulation. Calvin pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker with a minute left to play and held the puck in the Hope zone. A shot from the left wing by Ottsen deflected over the shoulder of the Hope goaltender with 11 seconds left on the clock. Duiker and Radersma were credited with assists on the play.
In overtime, both teams had chances to score, using the 3-on-3 format. The final minute provided several quality chances for both sides with neither team able to put a puck home, ending the contest in a tie.
Hope finished with a 36-34 shots on goal advantage but Calvin held a 12-8 advantage in the third period and a 6-5 advantage in overtime.
Worosz had 31 saves in goal for Calvin while Maclane Schick had 29 saves for Hope.
COACHES COMMENT: "Really really proud of our guys," said Calvin head coach Austin Huizenga. "To battle back, down three goals in the third against a really good Hope team, after a long and emotional day, it's nothing short of incredible."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Ferris State on December 6 for a game slated to start at 8:30 p.m.
