GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Calvin Knights experienced their 1st draw of the season on Saturday night at home against the Michigan State Spartans. The Knights drew 1-1 with the Spartans and are now 7-2-1 on the year.
Neither team was able to score in the 1st period in this low scoring brawl. Calvin had 15 shots on goal in the 1st period while MSU had 9.
The Spartans took the lead in the 2nd period with a goal from Mike Steiger, who was assisted by Matt Lis. Calvin had 9 shots on goal in the 2nd period while Michigan State had 13.
Zach Westrick came to the rescue for the Knights in the 3rd period scoring with 13:04 left to play in the period. He was assisted by
Hayden Fernhout and
Nathan Sova. Calvin held MSU to just 4 shots on goal in the 3rd period while putting up 11 of its own.
Ryan Smith was in goal for the Spartans with 34 saves and 1 goal allowed, while
Ryan Worosz was in goal for the Knights also with 34 saves and 1 goal allowed. Both teams had 35 shots on goal.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "Really happy with how our team responded tonight with our effort. I thought we played a full 60 minutes and played tough. Looking Forward to more games with that kind of effort.
NEXT UP: Calvin's next game will be at Hope College on Friday November 22nd at 7pm. The Knights will be looking to make a statement win against the Flying Dutchmen in Holland Michigan.
