KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Calvin Knights hockey team defeated Western Michigan University on Saturday night, 9-3 on the road to improve to 4-0.
Gabriel Sova scored the first goal of the game for Calvin with 10:53 left in the 1st period. He was assisted by
Henry Holleman. WMU scored just a minute later to tie the game back up. Charlie Carnes was the goal scorer for the Broncos.
Nathan Sova put the Knights back in front with just under 4 minutes left in the period. He was assisted by
Josiah Lambers, and
Zach Westrick.
Calvin scored three goals in the 2nd period to go up 5-1 on the Broncos.
Sergey Yakunin,
Oleg Grishatov, and
Zach Westrick all contributed. The Knights held WMU scoreless in the 2nd period, allowing 6 shots on goal while putting up 22 of their own.
Bryce Stokes was able to cut Calvins lead to 3 scoring 4 minutes into the 3rd period. Calvin put up 2 more goals of its own following Stokes's goal.
Ian Schweigert, and
Brock Hearth were the goal scorers. WMU scored its 3rd and final goal of the game with an unassisted score from Clayton Edman with 10:35 left in the game.
Sergey Yakunin scored the final goal of the game with 6:46 remaining to cap off a 9-3 Calvin win.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Austin Huizenga, "We had another really good effort from everyone tonight. Western is a good team who doesn't quit. We're looking forward to CMU this weekend."
NEXT UP: Calvin faces Central Michigan University on Saturday October 26th at 4:30pm. The Game will be on the road in Mount Pleasant Michigan.
