EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 16 Calvin ACHA Division 3 men's hockey held off Michigan State University to win 5-4 on Friday night.
The Knights improved their season record to 14-8-0.
The first period was tightly contested as both teams were able to generate good offensive opportunities. These opportunities resulted in a goal scored for both teams.
Myles Radersma scored first, putting Calvin up 1-0 only 2:49 into the game. Jax Vanittersum provided the response for Michigan State, tying the game with about 11 minutes remaining in the first. From that point both teams tightened up their defense and the score remained 1-1 at the end of the first.
The Calvin offense could do nearly no wrong in the second period. The Knights scored 3 goals in the period including a lightning-quick strike from
Myles Radersma only 18 seconds into the second period, his second goal of the game. Sam VanSchepen and Harry Ottsen also scored in the second, extending the Calvin lead to 4-1 going into the final period.
Momentum shifted like the tides in the third period. Alec Evans of Michigan State sparked a furious comeback, scoring 37 seconds into the period. About 3 minutes later, Jack Cesacci scored and brought Michigan State within just a single goal. MSU would search for an equalizer for the next 5 minutes until Dylan Holman finally completed the comeback, tying the game with just over 11 minutes yet to be played.
Myles Radersma finally broke the tie with about 5 minutes remaining, scoring the game-winning goal and completing his own hat trick.
Ryan Worosz was in goal for the Knights and recorded 30 saves. Calvin outshot MSU 37-34.
