GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 3 men's hockey team lost a high profile matchup against Notre Dame on Friday night. The Knights lost 7-4. On Saturday, Calvin fell at Notre Dame 7-2 as the Knights fell to 11-8-0 on the year.
On Friday, the Knights exploded out of the starting gate as Harry Ottsen put them up one only 1:33 into the first period. The first goal came on a power play advantage for the Knights and was assisted by
Drew Klomparens and
Myles Radersma. Notre Dame would respond with two goals of its own, coming from Zack Welsch and Hadley Stephenson. The score was 2-1 at the end of the first.
Notre Dame owned the second period. The Irish scored three goals. Zack Welsch scored his second goal of the game, along with Max Zypfer and Will Steadman. For Calvin,
Drew Klomparens,
Myles Radersma, and Harry Ottsen manufactured another goal, this time scored by Klomparens. Calvin changed goalies halfway through the second as
Cody Rhodes came in for
Ryan Worosz. The Irish had the advantage on the scoreboard at the end of the second, 5-2.
Calvin found more of an offensive rhythm in the third as
Drew Klomparens scored his second goal of game only 2:57 into the third period.
Josiah Harsh would also score for the Knights. Unfortunately for the Knights, their defense was unable to stop the Irish attack as they tacked on two goals of their own in the third. The final score of the game would show a 7-4 victory for the Irish.
Ryan Worosz and
Cody Rhodes were both in goal for the Knights. Worosz recorded 26 saves in a period and a half; Rhodes was able to stop 18 Notre Dame shots in the second half of the game. The Knights were outshot 51-21 in the game.
NEXT UP: Following Saturday's rematch against the Irish, the Knights will play Davenport on Friday, January 27 at 7:30pm. The game will be held at Eagles Ice Center in Grand Rapids, MI.
