Calvin ACHA D3 Hockey Closes Out Weekend Sweep of Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin ACHA Division 3 men's hockey team beat Western Michigan University 6-1 last Saturday night to complete a four-game series sweep. The Knights improved their record to 11-6-0 on the season.

The Knights came out firing and accurate in the first period, scoring 3 goals in the period. Drew Klomparens scored first with 6:03 remaining. Only one minute and 28 seconds later, Zach Seaman scored again for the Knights. Throughout the period, the Knights played solid team defense and kept the Broncos from getting anything going offensively. In the final seconds of the period, the Knights tacked on one more insurance goal, scored by Sam VanSchepen. Calvin took a 3-0 lead going into the second period.

Calvin's pace of scoring slowed in the second period as the Broncos defense tightened up and gave up no goals. Both teams had two power play opportunities, but neither were able to capitalize. The score remained 3-0 at the start of the third period.

Calvin found its offensive groove again in the third period. David Ensley scored first with 14:17 still remaining. Harry Ottsen also scored two goals in the third which combined to put an exclamation on the game as they both came in the final minute. Ryan Lehman scored the Bronco's lone goal of the game with 2:34 remaining. The final score read 6-1, a superb performance by the Knights.

Calvin outshot Western Michigan 63-20.

Liam Austin was in goal for the Knights and played a crucial role in disarming the Bronco's power play attacks. He recorded 19 saves.

NEXT UP: The Knights next game will be against Notre Dame on Friday, January 20 at 7:30pm in Eagles Ice Center. Calvin and Notre Dame will play a second game on Saturday, January 21 in South Bend, Indiana.
