Calvin ACHA D3 Hockey Celebrates Homecoming with 6-1 Win Over Cleary

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Calvin ACHA Division 3 hockey team recorded its second big win over the Cleary University Cougars this weekend on Saturday as it won 6-1.

The first period saw both teams go scoreless as the goalkeepers for each team kept their respective nets clean.  Knights' goalkeeper, Ryan Worosz, had 2 saves in the first period while Cougars' goalie, TJ Ramsey, recorded 11 in the first.

The second period, however, was another story.  The Knights got hot with 4 goals, while the Cougars scored 1. The Calvin goal scorers were Gabe Sova, scoring with 10:53 on the clock, Harry Ottsen, scoring with 9:59 on the clock, Keigan Oberski, scoring with 8:13 remaining in the period, and Joe Lugge, scoring within the last two minutes.  The Cougars lone goal of the night was scored by Wayne Talman with 16:19 on the clock.

The third period was again won by the Knights, 2 goals to 0. Zach Seaman scored first for the Knights, with 4:14 left.  Joe Lugge capped the Knights scoring for the night with his second goal of the game at 8 seconds left on the clock.

Ryan Worosz started in goal for the Knights and recorded 13 saves, giving up only 1 goal.

NEXT UP: The Knights look to continue their hot start next Friday, October 7 as they play Lawrence Tech in Southfield, MI.

COACHES COMMENT: "We're a super young team this year, with a lot of speed and a lot of skill," said Calvin Division III head hockey coach Jim Hartline. "When you're a freshman you have to learn how to play the back-to-back games, especially when you dominate a team the night before. I think we struggled to get going for the first period and a half or two periods and then they realized, 'Hey, we can move the puck and play hockey.'" Hartline also commented on kicking off a day celebrating Calvin's Homecoming and its 50 years as a hockey program. "It was a special atmosphere," he said. "There aren't too many hockey programs in the country that can say they've been around for 50 years and we're grateful to our alumni who have paved the way with our program. They've created tradition and have continued to support our current players as well."
