The Calvin University Knights fell to the Western Michigan Broncos 5-4 on Saturday night.
The Calvin Universtiy Knights D3 hockey team fell to the Western Michigan Broncos on their home opener on Saturday night.
The Knights came out with high energy and tempo in the first period, but it was the Broncos who got on the board first. The Broncos put one in the back of the net just three minutes into the game. About a minute later the Knights answered back with a goal from Ben Morse wtih assists from Zachary Malkowski and Jake Oakes. Action between both teams stayed high throughout the rest of the period but neither team could find the back of the net.
The first period concluded with the game tied 1-1.
In the second period the Broncos came out strong scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the period. The Knights fought back hard but could not find a way to score. The Broncos kept up the pressure but the Knights defense held them off to keep the knights within striking distance.
The second period concluded with the Broncos leading the Knights 3-1.
In the third period the Knights gave the Broncos everything they had and were rewarded with the opening goal of the period which was scored by Brendan Turcotte and assisted by Blake Jarrett. About seven minutes later the Broncos struck again to bring their lead back up to two goals. A minute later the Knights found the back of the net again with a goal from Andre Kilpela with the assist from Turcotte. This brought the Knights within one goal once again. With about a minute to go in the third period the Knights tied the game up with a goal from Malkowski with the helper from Mitchell Neisar. The game looked like it was heading into overtime after the Knights had come back to tie it, but with 15 seconds left to go the Broncos scored to take the lead and stun the Knights.
The game concluded with the Broncos coming out victorious over the Knights 5-4.
The Knights are back in action next week Friday Oct. 11th as they travel to Notre Dame.
