The Calvin University Knights D3 hockey team defeat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 5-4 on Friday night.
In the first period both teams came out with high energy looking to take the early lead. About halfway throught the period the Fighting Irish got on the board to take the 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later the Irish found the back of the net again to take a 2-0 lead. Just three minutes later the Knights got on the board with a goal from Brandon Turcotte with the assist from Mitchell Niesar.
The first period concluded with the Knights behind 2-1.
In the second period the Knights quickly tied the game just three minutes in with goal from Sam Shaver with the assist from Nathan Pohl.
The second period concluded with the game tied 2-2.
In the third period both teams looked to break the deadlock, and it was the Knights who found the back of the net with thirteen minutes to go with a goal from Kenlee Dome with the helper from Tyler Groot. Four minutes later the Fighting Irish tied the game back up at 3-3. Thirty seconds later the Irish took the lead 4-3. With about five minutes to go the Knights tied the game up again with a goal from Zach Malkowski with the assists from Luis Mendoza and Niesar. About a minute later the Knights took the lead with a goal from Nolan Bailen with the assists coming from Malkowski and Hayden Heys.
The game concluded with a Knights victory over the Fighting Irish 5-4.
Knights Goaltender Liam Austin had a big game with 48 saves.
The Knights return to action on Friday the 18th as they take on Davenport University at Eagles Ice Center at 5:30PM.
