NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin women's cross country team took 21st place in the Gold Division of the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational on Friday with a team score of 565 points.
Calvin was led by senior Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who finished the 5K course in a time of 18:32 that was good for 93rd place. Junior Annie Needs (Peru, Il./Saint Bede Academy) was 105th (18:41) with sophomore Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) a second behind in 107th (18:42). Senior Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was 136th (19:03).
Senior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) placed 147th (19:13) with sophomore Brynne Winiarski (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) 166th (19:43). Junior Taylor Ten Pas (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) came in 170th (19:55) while senior Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was 175th (20:08) and freshman Lauren VandenBosch (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) 183rd (20:54).
In the women's open race, sophomore Carly Bogdajewicz (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) ws 100th (19:51), senior Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 109th (20:15) and senior Jenna Gafner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) 110th (20:15).
COACHES COMMENT: "We had a solid team race," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "It was not quite as big of a performance as we were aiming for but it was another step in the right direction. We still need to get some things working for us so that we can make the most of our opportunities when we race.
NEXT UP: Calvin will break until October 19 when it competes at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational which will include several Top 25 Division III schools.
