WINNECONE, Wisc. - The 15th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team took 11th on Saturday at the UW-Oshkosh Town Sports Pre-National Invitational, placing 11th in a field of 50 teams with a score of 367 points.
The Knights were one of several nationally-ranked teams in the 6K race.
Second-ranked Washington University of St. Louis took first place with a team score of 70 points.
Calvin finished ahead of a number of nationally-ranked teams including 24th-ranked Bates (12th, 398 points), 21st-ranked Otterbein (13th, 409 points), 20th-ranked Wartburg (14th, 456 points), 25th-ranked St. Olaf (15th, 497 points) and 32nd-ranked St. Thomas (16th, 518 points).
Senior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) was Calvin's top individual finisher, placing 18th in a time of 22:29. Junior Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 36th (22:58) and senior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) 90th (23:42).
Freshman Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 104th (23:49), junior Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was 119th (24:00), senior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) 122nd (24:00) and senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS) 168th (24:28) to round out Calvin's finishers.
"We have some work to do yet but the potential is there for this team," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "We have had a few different pople moving around in the middle of our lineup so we are still a work in progress. Right now we just need to stick with the process and keep improving."
in the women's open (6K) race, senior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was 19th (24:09), junior Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 57th (24:53), junior Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) 58th (24:53), freshman Carly Bogdajewicz (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) 62nd (24:57) and sophomore Taylor Ten Pas (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) 83rd (25:20).
Calvin returns to action on October 29 when it competes at the MIAA Championships in Kalamazoo.
