Calvin Volleyball Clinches Share of MIAA Regular Season Title and Top Seed for Upcoming MIAA Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Knights of Calvin took down the Comets of Olivet on Wednesday night in straight sets and secured a share of the MIAA regular season championship in the process.

Calvin also gains the top seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament and will host the MIAA Tournament semifinals November 8 and the MIAA Tournament final on November 9.

The Knights won 25-10, 25-19, 25-13 as they now advance to 21-2 on the season and 7-0 in the MIAA, while the Comets of Olivet fall to 14-11 and 2-5 in conference.

Calvin came out swinging in the first set behind an 8 point run early on to take a 11-3 lead. Serving turned out to be the difference maker for the Knights in that first set as they ended up with 6, four of them coming from sophomore Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy).

In set 2, the Comets were the ones who took an early lead going up 6-1 and keeping a four point lead for over half of the set. But Calvin was able to fight its way back in and took control at the 15 point mark for both sides going on a short run to go up 20-15.

The rest was history as Calvin's front line simply overpowered the Comets in the third set winning 25-13. Coach Amber Warners said about the game, "I loved the way we played tonight and am proud of our team for winning a share of the conference championship."

Sarah Devries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) once again led the way for the Knights with 12 kills and hitting at a .346 clip. Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./ Timothy Christian) also had a great game for the Knights with 7 kills, with multiple of those coming from the back row. The Knights defense was led by libero Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) who ended the game with 14 digs along with 3 assists.

Calvin will be back in action wrapping up its regular season conference schedule away against Alma this Friday at 6:30PM before preparing for the MIAA tournament which will be next Friday and Saturday.
