GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin battled the Belles of Saint Mary's on Wednesday night and came away with the win in straight sets.
The Knights (16-1 overall, 5-0 MIAA) continue their unbeaten streak in the MIAA as Saint Mary's now falls to 8-11 overall and 1-4 in conference.
A key to the game for the knights was their aggressive service game as they came out in the first set with 5 service aces in the first set and added 3 in the second set and another 3 in the third.
Saint Mary's put up a good fight to begin the second set after the Knights started out with a 5-0 lead, Saint Mary's pulled back bring it to 7-6 . But halfway through the second set, Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./ Plymouth Christian Academy) went on a run from the service line with 3 service aces to pull Calvin to victory in the second set.
On top of that, Kelsey Smith (Vienna, VA./Madison) was a menace from behind the service line joining Kellogg with three aces.
The Knights attack was led by Sarah Devries (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Northpointe Christian) with 11 kills and Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills IL./ Timothy Christian) with 10 kills.
Also of note for the Knights was a bit of a new rotation as they looked to different faces throughout the three sets to give them the win. "We switched up our lineup a little bit tonight, said coach Amber Warners, and I really liked how our team worked with that and rose to the occasion for the win tonight."
The Knights will be back in action this weekend for the Midwest Tourney hosted here at VanNoord Arena as they take on Ithaca, Elmhurst, and fourth-ranked (Division III) Carthage.
