ALBION, Mich. - Calvin defeated an upset-minded Albion squad in three sets Friday night inside Kresge Gymnasium.
The Knights (15-1 overall, 4-0 MIAA) now hold a one-match lead over second place Trine in the league standings while Albion slips to 13-8 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Calvin trailed 16-15 in set one but rattled off a 10-5 run to take the set.
The Knights trailed 9-4 in set two but came back to forge a 17-17 tie on a service ace by sophomore Grace Kellogg (Bellevue, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS).
Calvin then scored the final eight points to take the set.
Albion continued to push the Knights in set three, leading 10-7 and later 21-20. With the set tied at 23, Calvin received a clutch dig that turned into a pass to senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) for the go-ahead kill. After an Albion timeout, DeVries came up with a match-clinching kill on a quick feed from sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS).
DeVries was a force for the Knights with 18 kills, 11 assists and a .529 attack percentage. Sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) had eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Schriemer had 23 assists
Kellog had 12 digs and three service aces. Freshman Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 11 digs. Junior McKenna Covey (Costa Mesa, Ca./Estancia HS) chipped in with five kills, two block assists and a hitting percentage of .529.
COACHES COMMENT: "Albion is a very athletic and scrappy team," said Calvin head volleyball coach Amber Warners. "I'm happy with how well we came out under a difficult atmosphere. We showed resiliency and held tough under pressure. I'm very happy with the road win."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Saint Mary's next Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside Van Noord Arena. The match will kick off a week of home action for the Knights as they host the Midwest Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
