MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - In a meeting of undefeated teams, Calvin dispatched Messiah in three sets Friday night at the Messiah Invitational.
Ranked second nationally, Calvin (7-0) defeated the Falcons (7-1) by scores of 25-17, 28-26, 25-18.
Calvin hit .364 in the opening set and built a 21-14 lead in set two. Messiah fought back to tie the score at 23 and then took a 26-25 lead. Senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) then pounded home a kill to tie the score at 26. Freshman Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) followed with a clutch service ace and freshman Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Il./Timothy Christian HS) followed with a game-ending kill on a pass from sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS).
Calvin then hit .364 once again in set three to pull away and seal the match win.
DeVries had a big match with 13 kills, 14 assists, six digs and five block assists. Sophomore Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) tallied nine kills and hit .500 while sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) had eight kills and three block assists. Westra also had eight kills and hit at a sizzling .500 clip. Schriemer had 17 assists and five digs. Wrubel collected a two-high nine digs.
COACHES COMMENT FROM AMBER WARNERS: "I thought we played through some really tough situations and we learned some valuable lessons tonight."
NEXT UP: Calvin will continue tournament play on Saturday by taking on Christopher Newport at noon and Cabrini at 2 p.m.
