Emory Tops Volleyball in NCAA Tournament Finals

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The 2018 journey ended for the Calvin volleyball team in the NCAA Tournament Finals on Saturday night. The Eagles of Emory University claimed their second national title with a three-set victory over the Knights. The Eagles finish the year with a nine-match winning streak at 30-6.

The first set was tightly contested, with neither team able to create a lead greater than four points. The Eagles took the set 25-22, finishing with five service aces. Senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) led Calvin with four kills.

Emory jumped on Calvin early in the second set and jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Calvin would cut the deficit to four points at 10-14, but Emory took the set, 25-16. Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had three of Calvin's nine kills in the set.

The Blue and Gold cruised in the third set to a 25-12 victory to claim the championship.

Sarah DeVries and Anna Kamp led Calvin with eight kills and were named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) led the Maroon and Gold with 11 assists. The freshman duo of Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison) both finished with five kills, Kellogg led the Knights with 12 digs.

Emory held Calvin to a .125 hitting percentage and finished with seven service aces.

Calvin finishes the season with a 33-2 record. The Calvin senior class of Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville), Rachel Herrera (Schereville, Ind./Illiana Christian) and Anna Kamp finish their careers with one national title, three trips to the NCAA Tournament semifinals, 126 victories, four MIAA regular season titles, three MIAA Tournament titles and a perfect 56-0 record in MIAA play. The senior class is the first class in MIAA history to go undefeated and win the MIAA outright all four years.
