GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's volleyball team will host Alma College Saturday at 1 p.m. for its last regular conference match of the season.
The Teams: The Scots come into the competition 18-6 overall and 6-1 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 24-1 overall record and 7-0 MIAA record into the match.
The Coaches: Alex Leja is in her second year as head coach of the Alma volleyball program. Leja took over the Scots' volleyball program after serving as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif. A native of Palm Springs, Calif., Leja is graduaded in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts. She played three years for the volleyball program. Following college, Leja pursued international professional volleyball, but returned to the United States after suffering an ankle injury.
Dr. Amber Warners is in her 17th year as head coach of the Calvin volleyball program. A 1990 Calvin graduate, Warners was a former two-sport standout for Calvin in volleyball and softball. Warners earned her master's degree from Michigan State University in sports psychology in 1996. She also received her Ph.D. from Michigan State. In 16 years as Calvin's head coach, she has compiled a record of 498-73. Under Warners the Knights have won three national championships, in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Warners has led Calvin to 14 consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
The Players: For the Scots, freshman Sara Majerle averages 3.57 kills per set and a 3.85 digs per set percentage.
For the Knights, Senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill. / Chicago Christian) averages 4.23 kills per set and has a .270 attack percentage. Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northpointe Christian) averages 3.27 kills per set and has an attack percentage of .347. Senior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville) has a 3.53 digs per set percentage.
