Calvin Women's Volleyball Set to Take on Olivet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's volleyball team will travel to Olivet College Wednesday to take on the Comets at 6:30 p.m.

The Teams: The Comets are 14-13 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 23-1 overall record and 6-0 MIAA record into the match. 

The Coaches: Megan Merchant is in her seventh season as the head women's volleyball coach at Olivet College. Merchant is the winningest volleyball coach in school history, as the Comets have won 56 matches during her tenure at Olivet. Merchant earned a bachelor's degree in interpersonal & organizational communications and Bible theology from Great Lakes Christian College (GLCC) in 2009 and teacher's certificate from Cornerstone University in 2010. At GLCC, she was a four-year starter on the volleyball team as an outside hitter for three years and setter for one year. Merchant was a three-year captain and earned collegiate All-American honors.

Dr. Amber Warners is in her 17th year as head coach of the Calvin volleyball program. A 1990 Calvin graduate, Warners was a former two-sport standout for Calvin in volleyball and softball. Warners earned her master's degree from Michigan State University in sports psychology in 1996. She also received her Ph.D. from Michigan State. In 16 years as Calvin's head coach, she has compiled a record of 506-74. Under Warners the Knights have won three national championships, in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Warners has led Calvin to 14 consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Warners is a four-time AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year (2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014). Warners is tied for second on the all-time NCAA Division III AVCA National Coach of the Year Award list. She has helped coach six perfect 16-0 seasons in the league. 

The Players: For the Comets, Brittany Prince averages 3.45 kills per set and has a .328 attack percentage. Gabrielle Mundt averages 4.59 digs per set.

For the Knights, senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill. / Chicago Christian) averages 4.22 kills per set and has a .273 attack percentage. Senior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville) has a 3.56 digs per set percentage.  Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northpointe Christian) averages 3.22 kills per set and has a .346 attack percentage.
