GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team claimed a 25-23, 25-8, and 25-12 conference victory over visiting Adrian College Tuesday night at Van Noord Arena.
The Knights improve to 20-1 overall and 6-0 in the MIAA.
Adrian (9-13 overall, 2-4 MIAA) controlled the lead throughout the first set, but the Knights stuck in there and came back late in the set to win it.
Calvin took over in set two and ran away with it to win 25-8. The Knights hit at a .429 attack percentage in set two led by kills from senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS).
The Bulldogs tightened things up in the beginning of the third set, but a run of aces by junior Abby Gorter (Woodbury, Minn. / New Life Academy) gave the Knights the lead they needed and Calvin established dominance to close out the match.
Kamp led Calvin with 14 kills, six digs and a .367 hitting percentage.
Freshman Kelsey Smith (Vienna, VA. / Madison) had a great performance with seven kills, two digs, four aces, two block assists and a hitting percentage of .500. Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had six kills, four block assists and .250 hitting percentage. Freshman Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) added three kills and six digs. Freshman Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) tallied 11 assists and four digs.
As a team, Calvin hit .333.
Head Coach Amber Warners stated, "I'm happy with the way we bounced back from a lackluster start. That's not always easy to do, but I'm really happy with our consistent play after the first set.
The Knights will return to competition this weekend as they head Elmhurst, Illinois to compete in the Elmhurst Tournament. Friday evening, they will take onWis.-Whitewater followed by Carthage and Aurora on Saturday.
