NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Calvin held off an upset-bid from host Saint Mary's Wednesday night as the No. 1 ranked Knights claimed a five-set (25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-8) conference win.
Calvin (16-0 overall, 5-0 MIAA) is now 4-0 in five-set match this year.
The Knights pulled away for a set one win and held a 16-13 lead in set two. The host Belles (10-12 overall, 1-4 MIAA) then fought back to forge a 21-19 lead and finished off the set with a 4-2 surge.
Calvin hit at a .500 clip in set three to go back on top in the match but Saint Mary's refused to fold. In set four Calvin led 23-22 but the Belles answered back with three unanswered points to force a pivotal set five.
In set five, Calvin moved out in front 7-6. The Knights then got hot, rattling off seven straight points to take control of the set and the match.
Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) tallied three kills in Calvin's final set five run, en route to finishing with her third triple-double of the season. DeVries finished the match with 20 kills, 25 assists, 14 digs and seven block assists.
Calvin had 26 block assists in the win. Sophomore Sydney Segard (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had six block assists. Junior Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg HS) had a match-high eight block assists.
"I thought we played well overall," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "St. Mary's played great defense and we had too many errors bunched together in sets two and four. I was happy with our resiliency."
Calvin will now prepare to host the annual Midwest Invitational. The Knights open play on Friday with a 3 p.m. match against Susquehanna University and will then meet Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m.
