GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's volleyball team will host its rival Hope College Saturday at 7 p.m for their first conference match of the season.
The Teams: The Flying Dutch come into the competition 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 11-0 overall record and 0-0 MIAA record into the match.
The Coaches: Becky Schmidt is in her 14thseason as head coach of the Hope Volleyball program. A 1999 Hope graduate, Schmidt played middle blocker and ranked among the NCAA leaders in several statistical categories. She was voted the most valuable player in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) as both a junior and senior. As a senior she became the first Hope volleyball player to receive NCAA Division III All-American honors. In her time coaching at Hope, she has recordedan overall record of 381-98. Schmidt guided the 2014 Flying Dutch to their first national championship.
Dr. Amber Warners is in her 17th year as head coach of the Calvin volleyball program. A 1990 Calvin graduate, Warners was a former two-sport standout for Calvin in volleyball and softball. Warners earned her master's degree from Michigan State University in sports psychology in 1996. She also received her Ph.D. from Michigan State. In 16 years as Calvin's head coach, she has compiled a record of 498-73. Under Warners the Knights have won three national championships, in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Warners has led Calvin to 14 consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
The Players: For the Flying Dutch, Senior Katie Rietberg averages 4.54 kills per set. Junior Vachon averages 4.29 digs per set. For the Knights, Senior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill. / Chicago Christian) averages 4.31 kills per set and has a .264 attack percentage. Senior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville) has a 3.54 digs per set percentage. Junior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northpointe Christian) averages 3.18 kills per set and 2.72 digs per set.
