GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 6 ranked Calvin volleyball team stayed perfect in MIAA play with a 3-0 victory over Adrian on Saturday afternoon. The Knights topped Adrian, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, to move to 14-3 and 10-0 in the MIAA. Adrian falls to 4-14 and 4-6 in the MIAA.
With the Knights leading the first set, 7-6, Calvin won the next three points to push the lead to 10-6. The Bulldogs cut the Calvin lead to 11-10, but Calvin would rally with a 5-1 run, capped with two-straight service aces from sophomore Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian). A kill from junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) ended the set at 25-20.
The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run in the second set to take a 12-9 lead. A tip kill from senior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian) ended the run and a pair of service aces from junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) gave the Knights the lead back at 15-14. The Bulldogs took the lead back at 20-19 and push the lead up to 22-20. The Knights would not fold and closed the set on a 5-0 run to win, 25-22.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set, the Knights responded with an 8-2 run to take back the lead. Adrian cut the Calvin lead to one on multiple occasions, but they were unable to break the Knights. At 16-15, a 6-1 run put the set away and Calvin would take the set at 25-19.
Anna Kamp led all players with 14 kills on Saturday; Sarah DeVries finished with 12 kills, three service aces and led the Knights with three blocks. Senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) tallied 34 assists in the win and Keilahna Castillo notched 13 digs and three service aces.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday at Saint Mary's and will then host the Midwest Invitational.
