The top-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling at second-ranked Hope Friday night by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7.
Calvin (24-1 overall, 12-1 MIAA) held a 21-20 lead in set four but Hope (24-1 overall, 11-1 MIAA) scored five of the final six points and then used the momentum to take control in set five. Serving proved crucial in the match as Calvin committed 15 service errors while Hope came up with 10 service aces.
Calvin received 16 kills from sophomore Maggie Kamp, 15 kills from freshman Laura Danhoff and a near triple-double performance from senior setter Megan Rietema. Rietema tallied nine kills, 39 assists and 13 digs. Junior Stacey Kamp chipped in with seven kills while senior Kristen Zietse had 12 digs.
The victory by Hope snapped an eight-match losing streak against Calvin and was its first against the Knights since the 2010 MIAA Tournament finals.
Calvin will now break until next Wednesday when it hosts Saint Mary's at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
