Calvin Women's Triathlon Makes Collegiate Debut in Dual Meet Against Millikin University

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's triathlon made its collegiate debut on Saturday, competing in a dual meet against Millikin University.

The dual meet was held inside the larger competition of the Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon Saturday morning. The sprint triathlon competition included a 750 meter swim, a 20K kilometer bike and a 5 kilometer run.

In the dual meet, Millikin defeated Calvin 6-26 using scoring similar to cross country with the top three finishers for each team counting towards the team point totals with up to four displacers eligible for either team.

Millikin took the top six spots. Calvinn's top finisher was junior Megan Schenkel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who placed 7th in the dual meet and 171st overall in the Reeds Lake Triathlon with a time of 1:31.19.

Junior Kelly Makela (Boise, Id./Boise HS) was ninth in 1:36.40 (268 overall).

Freshman Paige Brodeur (St. Charles, Il./St. Charles East HS) was 11th individually (307th overall) in a time of 1:39.51. Junior Claire Costello (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead HS) was 12th individually (307th overall) in a time of 1:41.23. Junior Stephany Morrow (Eagle Lake Mn./Mankato East HS) was 13th (396th overall) in a time of 1:46.49. Freshman Libby Vermeulen (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day HS) was 14th (432nd overall) in a time of 1:51.03.

Head coach Kattie Carpenter was pleased with the effort of the Knights in their inaugural race.

"I am really happy with our performance and I am so proud of our athletes," said Carpenter. "We have a very hard working group. Today was a great stepping stone. Now that they have their first race behind them they know what the competition is all about. This will provide motivation and inspiration to keep striving to get better. We are looking forward to the rest of the season and continues to improve as a team."

Calvin returns to action on September 14 when it competes at Trine University in the Trine Triple Sprint competition.
