GENEVA, Oh. - Calvin senior Katie Diekema will once again have a chance to race for All-America honors.
Diekema posted the third-best time of the prelims in the 1500 meter run Thursday afternoon at the NCAA III Championships at the Spire Institute. Diekema posted a time of 4:34.09 to book her ticket to Saturday's championship final. The time was third-best time out of the prelims. Needing only to finish in the top four of her heat, Diekema grabbed the lead after one lap and held it until the final 20 meters to comfortably move ahead to Saturday.
Diekema has posted three successive All-America distance campaigns with the streak beginning last May at the 2018 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, continuing last fall at the 2018 NCAA III Cross Country Championships and then extending into March at the 2019 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
"Katie was on top of her game once again," said Calvin distance running coach Brian Diemer. "She moved into the lead early in the race and stayed out of trouble. She made strong tactical surges as the field pushed in from behind and did exactly what she needed to do. She has put herself in good position for Saturday."
Diekema is scheduled to compete in two championship races on Saturday as she will open with the 1500 meter run early in the afternoon and later run in the 5,000 meters in the second-to-last event on the track.
