Calvin's Katie Diekema Takes Third in Mile Run at NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - Calvin senior Katie Diekema closed out her indoor collegiate track and field career in All-American fashion Saturday afternoon at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) took third in the mile run with a school record time of 4:52.15. The finish is the highest by a Calvin runner in the even at the indoor national meet. It also marks the third All-America plaudit of Diekema's Calvin running career joining her fourth place finish in the 1,500 meters at the 2018 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and her 16th place finish at the 2018 NCAA III Cross Country Championships.

Diekema entered the weekend with the fourth-best time in the race and moved up a spot in Saturday's championship final with a career-best effort.

Emily Bryson of Brandeis won the race in a time of 4:45.80. Bryson pushed past Anna Passannate of Williams to win the race. Diekema maintained contact with the top two finishers while remaining clear of the rest of the field.

"Katie is such a smart runner," said Calvin distance coach Brian Diemer. "She executed her race plan to perfection today. She has studied her craft diligently and improved each year as a collegiate runner. It was like watching a pupil take all of the lessons she has learned and graduate with honors. We are all just incredibly proud of her performance."

Diekema is the first Calvin Indoor All-American since Nicole Michmerhuizen achieved the feat in 2014.

Diekema's All-America finish earned Calvin six points as the Knights finished 38th in the final team standings.
