GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin improved to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA with a 9-0 conference victory over Olivet Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin is now locked in a three-way tie for third place in the MIAA conference standings.
Calvin won all three of its doubles matches by 8-0 scores. Sophomores Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were winners at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won at No. 2 doubles while freshmen Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) and Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community) won at No. 3 doubles.
Newhof was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Rae Claramunt at No. 1 singles to run her season singles record to 21-5. Brouwer downed Miranda Pier 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Klopfenstein rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Keely Cruz at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emily Foulk at No. 4 singles.
Bonner claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win against Alex Lesko at No. 5 singles. Ganop then claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Julia Miklusicak at No. 6 singles.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. in a key conference match.
