GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 9-0 conference victory over Alma Wednesday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
Calvin (9-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA) took the early lead by sweeping the three doubles points. Sophomores Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were 8-1 winners at No. 1 doubles while freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles. Junior Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Newhof defeated Brooke Butterfield 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Brouwer topped Abigal Davenport 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) dropped Caroline Ross 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) won 6-1, 6-0 over Lucy McCarthy at No. 4 singles.
Brown was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Bernadette Garibay at No. 5 singles. Bonner was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Emily McDonald at No. 6 singles.
"It was good to get a conference win on our home courts," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We need to string a few wins together and this was a good start."
Calvin will travel to Albion on Saturday for a conference match at 1 p.m.
