SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Calvin picked up its fourth consecutive victory and improved to 8-3 in the process with a 8-1 non-conference victory at Spring Arbor University Wednesday afternoon.
Calvin gained the early momentum by taking two of the three doubles points. Sophomores Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were 8-5 winners at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won a key 8-7 contest at No. 2 doubles winning the tiebreaker 7-4.
Calvin swept all six singles flights in straight sets.
Newhof claimed a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Sela Clifford at No. 1 singles. Brouwer was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Bri VanRavenswaay at No. 2 singles while Poortenga downed Morgan Summons 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Emma Joseph at No. 4 singles. Freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) topped Jewell Hall 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 singles. Bonner then defeated Lindsay Scott 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
"This was a nice win for our team heading conference play," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We have three conference matches next week so we need a few good practices to get ready. We will enjoy this victory tonight but it's back to work tomorrow as we prepare for a big upcoming week."
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday as it travels to rival Hope for a 4 p.m. conference match.
