Calvin Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Tennis Tournament

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin competed at the ITA Central Region Tournament this weekend at Kalamazoo College.

Sophomore Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) highlighted the weekend for the Knights as she advanced to the Round of 16 of the singles tournament. Newhof opened the tournament with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win over Mira Amin of Case Western Reserve in the opening round. She then came up with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alexandra Cash of Denison. On Saturday morning, Newhof recorded a thrilling 0-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Kenyon's Daria Beshentsava. She then pushed Catherine Xu of Chicago in the Round of 16 before falling 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.

Sophomore Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) picked up a 6-2, 1-6, 10-1 win over Meryl Reams of Ohio Wesleyan before falling to Erika Oku 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 64.

In other singles play, freshman Maya Klopfenstein fell to Erin Friedrich of DePauw 6-1, 6-2 and G race Brown fell to Mackenzie Wills of Ohio Northern 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles action, Brouwer and Newhof combined for an 8-3 opening round win over Julia Bachmann and Isabella Russo of Kalamazoo. Brouwer and Newhof then fell to a Kenyon College duo 9-7 in the Round of 32.

Sophomore Alexis Bonner (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) fell 8-0 to Lisa Chionis and Stephanie Ren of Washington University.

"I thought it was a good weekend overall at the ITA's," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "It's always great to see and compete against the top players in the region. I really liked our mental toughness we showed as a team, especially in singles play. We look forward now to dual play starting in February."

Calvin's first dual match of the 2019 spring season is slated for February 7 when the Knights host Cornerstone at 6 p.m.
