GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team defeated home court on Saturday afternoon. The Knights defeated the visiting Thunder of Trine 8-1 to improve to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.
"It is always nice to play outside and win in the MIAA," said head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We were able to do both. I was pleased with our play and we now have to focus on two big matches, next week."
The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Madison Hatkevich and Zoe Laubach at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) finished doubles play with an 8-5 victory over Kyra Braun and Katie Simon at No. 3 doubles.
Leah Newhof made quick work of Madison Hatkevich at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Anna Asfour brought out the broom on court three with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kinnsey Pass.
Brittney Statema sank Katie Simon at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Madeline Brouwer bounced Zoe Laubach at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Lark Foote rallied at No. 4 singles on Saturday, coming from behind to defeat Theresa Magenheimer, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.
The Thunder zapped Calvin at No. 5 singles to finish the match.
The Knights host Saint Mary's on Wednesday for a match that has major implications in the MIAA race.
