GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team moved into a first place lead through day one of its own Calvin Quad Invitational with Albion, Carthage and Ohio Northern.
The Knights have a first day total of 319 points with Albion second (244), Carthage third (238) and Ohio Northern fourth (136).
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of senior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer HS), senior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS), freshman Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) and junior Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) took first place with a season-best time of 1:38.58. The time currently ranks fifth nationally in Division III.
In the 500 freestyle, junior Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took second with a season-best time of 5:22.42.
Chao was second in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:13.36. Gunderson was third in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.56.
Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Wellman, sophomore Kylie Shaw (Dixon, Il./Dixon HS), junior Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Emilia Shokoohi (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) took first place in a time of 4:05.56.
COACHES COMMENTS: "It was a great night for our team," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We dropped times throughout our lineup and our depth was very strong. Our enthusiasm was very high and we put into practice many of the training lessons we've worked on. I'm extremely proud of this group with the progress that it is making."
NEXT UP: Action continues on Saturday with the second session set for 10 a.m. and the third and final session of the quad set to begin at 6 p.m.
