WHEATON, Ill. – The Calvin women's swimming & diving team silenced the Thunder of Wheaton on Saturday, 172-90. The Knights improve to 2-1 on the season.
"It was our best performance on the road in a couple years," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Good things happen when we realize it is not about ourselves and we learn to ask questions."
The Knights started the day with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), freshman Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Central), freshman Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and junior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) touched the wall at 1:49.29.
Senior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) was the fastest swimmer in the 1000-yard freestyle at 11:11.30. Sophomore Robyn Ellens (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) finished in second at 11:26.26.
Senior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) topped the competition in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:56.21.
Junior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:01.86.
In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Grace Anne Delcompare (Naples/Home School) won with a time of 2:14.63.
Wellman won her second race of the day in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:16.40.
Serino touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:19.15. Murphy finished in second place.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won the race at 1:00.44.
Hannah Chao was the fastest swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:13.03.
The Maroon and Gold closed the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Anna Serino, Alyssa Oezer, Emily Gunderson and senior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) won at 3:38.78.
The Knights will travel to Wayne State on Friday.
