GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets Friday night against Division II competition. The Knights defeated Hillsdale 148-86 but fell to Grand Valley State 159-82 in the 2017-18 dual meet opener for Calvin at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Ranked 24th in the first Division III College Swim Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll, Calvin had a slew of sterling performances Friday night.
Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.12 and placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:17.86). Her time in the 200 freestyle is currently the sixth-best in NCAA III women's swimming this season.
Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also terrific, winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.89 and taking second in the 50 freestyle in 24.76. Her time in the 100 freestyle is the 11th-best in Division III women's swimming this season while her time in the 50 freestyle ranks 12th.
Junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) provided a strong fourth place swim in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.46 while junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) was fifth in the 500 free (5:25.05) and fourth in the 1000 free (10:59.50).
In the diving competition, senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) was second on the three-meter board (232.85) and third on the one-meter board (194.10). Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was second on the one-meter board (195.15) and third on the three-meter board (201.55). Freshman Hannabeth Magussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) was fourth on the three-meter board (175.75) and freshman Stephany Morrow (Eagle Lake, Mn./Mankato East HS) fifth (145.75).
Freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) had a strong collegiate dual meet debut, taking fourth in the 200 IM (2:16.78) and in the 100 backstroke (1:00.81). In the 100 breaststroke junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Tx./Regents School of Austin HS) was fourth (1:14.79).
In the 200 freestyle relay, Chao, sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), Serino and Van Harn placed second in 1:40.20 which currently ranks seventh nationally. Calvin's 200 medley relay of sophomore Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS), Wolf, Gunderson and senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) was third in 1:53.58.
"I was very pleased with the results tonight," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We had some athletes really get off to a good start. It was good to get our first competition in and now it's time to move forward."
Calvin will host the MIAA Relays next Friday at Venema Aquatic Center with the meet starting at 6 p.m.
