ALMA, Mich. - Calvin dropped a 2-1 conference decision at a rain-soaked Scotland Yard Wednesday afternoon.
The host Scots (9-4-1 overall, 4-2-0 MIAA) scored both of its goals in the first half in taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Kayleigh Riley scored on a shot from a tight angle in the box in the 10th minute with Peyton Erndteman scored on a clean break on goal 17 minutes in.
With the wind at its back Calvin (3-9-3 overall, 1-3-2 MIAA) outshot Alma 8-3 in the second half and broke through for a goal with 6:48 left in regulation.
Freshman Kayla Beebe (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) ignited the play with a rush through the right wind and slid a pass into the box that freshman Emma Thompson (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) deposited into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Calvin continued to pressure in the closing moments, receiving a free kick from outside the box and a corner kick but could not generate a strong scoring chance.
Calvlin finished the match with a 13-10 shots at goal advantage. Junior Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) had a pair of saves for Calvin in goal.
The Knights remain in sixth place in the MIAA league standings, two points ahead of Olivet. The top six teams in the final MIAA standings will receive spots in the MIAA Tournament.
Calvin is scheduled to host Albion on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and will then host Olivet next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought Alma put us on our heels to start the match," said Calvin women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Credit to them for taking advantage and putting two in. I thought we put a lot of presssure on in the second half and gave ourselves a chance in getting a goal back but it was too little too late. We have our work cut out for us going forward and need to get back to work tomorrow to prepare for a tough Albion side."
